Coast Guard finds 12 Haitians, 11 Dominican migrants at sea

The Coast Guard repatriated 11 Dominican migrants and returned 12 Haitians to the Dominican Republic on Saturday, Aug. 28.

The folks were being observed two days before on a 25-foot, makeshift boat in the Mona Passage, a strait separating the islands of Hispaniola and Puerto Rico. The Mona Passage connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean Sea, and is frequently applied as a transport route involving the Atlantic and the Panama Canal.

The interdiction, by way of the Cutter Winslow Griesser, is aspect of an ongoing Coastline Guard and Caribbean Border Interagency team partnership aimed at deterring and halting illegal voyages in the Mona Passage.

Considering that Oct. 1, 2020, the two groups, together with federal and condition spouse organizations, have halted 2,100 migrants who were being deemed to be traveling illegally to Puerto Rico, according to the Coastline Guard.

How it occurred

The interdiction transpired Thursday afternoon, immediately after a Customs and Border Protection marine patrol plane crew spotted a migrant vessel, about 42 nautical miles north of Mona Island, Puerto Rico. The cutter Winslow Griesser, dependent in San Juan, was despatched out and uncovered the migrants’ makeshift boat that carried 11 Dominicans, 11 Haitian adults and just one Haitian small.

The Winslow Griesser crew transferred the adults to a Dominican Republic Navy vessel just outside the house Santo Domingo in Dominican Republic. The small was transferred to regional authorities ashore from the Santo Domingo-dependent Childrens and Adolescents Countrywide Council, in accordance to the Coast Guard.

Haiti aid initiatives

Meantime, the Coastline Guard declared it is continuing its recovery mission in Haiti pursuing the Aug. 14 earthquake, as are the U.S armed forces and other relief groups.
