Metallica Unveils Blackened Willett Kentucky Straight Rye

Currently rye whiskey, tomorrow the earth? Metallica-backed whiskey manufacturer Blackened is making its 1st foray into Kentucky with a new rye in collaboration with cult craft distillery Willett. Blackened x Willett Kentucky Straight Rye brings together the prowess of an proven distiller with the ground breaking “sonic enhancement” system that was pioneered by the late, good Dave Pickerell, one particular of the brand’s founding partners. The release is the first in Blackened’s new “Masters of Whiskey” series, which will attribute collaborations with other distillers in the potential. It is also the to start with rye for the brand name.

Pickerell was a close friend of the Kulsveen household, which owns and operates Willett he even lent know-how when they ended up commencing to distill back in 2011. The partnership with Metallica came a couple years later on. When Blackened was launching in 2018, the Kulsveens welcomed Pickerell again to the distillery to shoot a advertising video, and later opened their doors to the band, giving them a powering-the-scenes tour, offering them supper and sharing cigars.

What’s so exclusive about Blackened x Willett Kentucky Straight Rye

Although Pickerell passed away in November 2018, his successor, former Stranahan’s master distiller Rob Dietrich, has continued the marriage, performing with Willett master distiller Drew Kulsveen to craft this new launch. Blackened x Willett marries two straight ryes—one with a high-rye-articles mashbill, the other with a lower proportion of the grain—selected from Willett’s Family Estate barrels, ranging in age from 4 to 8 yrs aged.

Following marrying—blending the whiskeys with each other to type a balanced whole—the rye was then positioned into madeira casks for a complete of up to 14 months. Like Blackened’s core American whiskey, which blends bourbon and rye from a number of states, this end was carried out using the brand’s proprietary Black Sound system. Pickerell created the innovation particularly for Blackened.
