Buried in Treasures – (Virtual Class) – Help for People With Hoarding Issues

2 min read

Hoarding is a serious problem that affects the safety and life of the person with hoarding issues, as well as their family members and pets.

Hoarding is a very isolating problem. Hoarding knows no bounds. It affects more people than most people realize. But there is hope. There is help available for people with hoarding issues.

With the many changes that have occurred over the past five months a Virtual Hoarding workshop has been put in place that allows people from all over the world to participate. Anywhere – anytime!

The “Buried in Treasures” 16-week work group is a highly structured group that combines CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) with organizing practices and tips in a support group setting.

The program use the book by the same name and is modeled after the work of Drs. Tolin, Frost and Steketee, the leading experts on hoarding in the country. The group allows people to share their experiences, therefore building trust and allowing the participants to start the process of understanding how they got into their situation and start the process of healing.

The workshop is about more than clutter. It is about overcoming challenges, increasing motivation and reducing acquiring. Clutter has gotten in the way of how the participants want to live their life. They are overwhelmed, embarrassed and isolated. They want to change, but don’t know how. They want help, but don’t know where to get it.

The program requires the participants to dig deep into themselves and be honest with how they got to where they are. It is an emotional journey. One that most of the people in the program might not have expected. There is weekly homework they are expected to complete. From reading a chapter in the book, practice decluttering, non-shopping trips and more.

The “Buried in Treasures” group allows people to get the help they want and need, without embarrassment. It’s a life-changing experience. When the participants leave the program they feel empowered to continue making changes.

It is a long program, but when it’s over the participants don’t want to leave. They have bonded, they have learned more about themselves in the 16-weeks than they ever realized. They are empowered to make changes and they are ready to start a new chapter in their life. A chapter that doesn’t include hoarding.
